First stop on Bali, Indonesia: the little village of Amed, still somewhat spared by tourism. Our journey here went perfectly. We did have to catch up on a good portion of sleep for a whole day, though – no problem at all in our first, super chilled accommodation.
Here in Amed you can rent your own clean little bungalow for around €15 per day and person. A lovely shared pool and sea view included.
Our plan for now is simply to relax. So apart from a few snorkelling trips and a scooter ride to nearby temples, we haven't done much. Of course we've already found out where to get the best French-Indonesian fusion food, and my plan is to work my way through the entire menu.
Amed lies on the north-east coast, and the main attractions here are the reefs that start right at the shore. The corals are still fairly intact and there is a huge variety of fish and other sea creatures.
Titan triggerfish, blue-spotted stingrays, various kinds of pufferfish, porcupinefish, boxfish, parrotfish, trumpetfish in different colours, a tiny Japanese shipwreck, beautiful corals, a comb jelly, surgeonfish, a moray eel and lots of other small fish – we got to see all of them on our very first snorkelling trips.
Best snorkelling spot so far: Selang Beach (black volcanic sand and the best reef so far).
Temples: Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung.
